Hi! I’m Mother Earth. I love to take care of my oceans, plants, animals and humans. But my favorite hobby is educating children around the world! Unfortunately, I’ve been feeling sick lately. Climate change, deforestation, greenhouse gases… I used to be the coolest planet in the galaxy, full of energy, but not anymore. Will you help me?

Want to get the kids inspired to help Mother Earth? Click here to read them a letter from Mother Earth! Dear children, I would like to introduce myself, I am Mrs. Earth. I live together with other planets and stars in a very quiet place in the universe, but I must admit that my life is not boring at all. In fact, I am the hardest working planet in the galaxy, thanks to the fact that I am full of life and energy. You already know my best friends, they are the Sun and the Moon. My good and bright friend the Sun works every day so that I have light and warmth, without him, my life would be dark and sad. My friend the Moon always accompanies me when the Sun goes away, she takes care of me throughout the night, she is magical and mysterious. The Moon makes us have sweet dreams while we sleep, and it is also in charge of making our dreams come true when we do the right thing. On the other hand, I work day and night, I never rest! I have many living things to take care of, from the tiniest animals to the largest. I also take care of rivers and oceans, trees and flowers. But my true passion is taking care of all the children that live on my continents. And you are wondering, why is that your passion mother earth? The answer is obvious, because it is super fun! Children are my favorite living beings, because they are as creative as the universe, and they are as full of energy as I am! Children are the most curious beings that inhabit me, and I am an inexhaustible source of knowledge, therefore, my favorite hobby is educating children. Besides passions and hobbies, I also have infinite responsibilities. Caring for each of the living beings that inhabit me is not an easy task and requires a lot of discipline and commitment. Lately I feel weak, and that worries me, since I have never in millions of years been ill. Galaxies, planets, and humans have realized that I no longer have as much life and energy, and that my health is deteriorating. And the truth is that they are right, the people who inhabit me are not aware of the damage they are doing to me. They are cutting down my trees, filling my seas with plastic, and mistreating my animals. That's why I need to get in touch with you, because you are the future, and I know that you are going to take care of me, because I am going to teach you how to do it! Remember that my passion is you, and I will always share all my secrets with you.

This DIY craft project is suitable for kids of any age and is a fun and unique way to decorate their room. It’s also a perfect project to do while babysitting!

To create the craft project you need:

  • Print the two pdfs, of the happy and sad Mother Earth (print the pdfs here)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • A bandaid
  • Colored markers
  • A string
  • Paper to cut to create the arms and legs.

Step 1 Using the scissors, cut out the two Mother Earths. This step has to be done with adult supervision. Then, cut out the thermometer and heart.

Step 2 Now, it’s time to have fun coloring! Color both of the Mother Earths. We used lighter blue and green colors for the happy, healthy Mother Earth. On the other hand, for the sad, sick Mother Earth we used duller colors. We colored the thermometer a deep red, to represent global warming. Then, paint the heart whatever color you prefer and you’re done!

Step 3 It’s time to create the arms and legs. We used blue and green colored paper, but you can use whatever color you prefer! If you don’t have colored paper you can also use markers to color them if you’d like. For this, cut 4 strips of paper, approximately 15cm long.

Once you have cut out the 4 strips of paper, fold them back and forth to create an accordion effect.

Step 4 Glue, the arms and legs to both Mother Earths. Next, you can glue the string to the Mother Earths so you can hang them. After this, glue the heart to the happy earth and the thermometer to the sad earth. Finally, you can add the bandaid as a finishing touch to the sick Mother Earth, as a symbol healing the wounds of the Mother Earth.
